"Yes," said Patterson. "I stop for them when they look tired or poor. I feel sorry for them when they're walking and I'm in my car. They haven't as much money as I have, and so I'm ready to help them."But as he spoke, he turned his head and looked at Ford's coat. It was a good coat and Patterson thought about it a lot as he kept us eyes on the road in front. They came at last to a big forest with high trees on each side of the road. This part of the country was very beautiful, but they did not see any other cars or people, and there were no houses. Then Patterson saw something on, the road far away in front of the car. "What's that?" he cried. "Can you see it? It looks like a man. There! Can you see his face? Is he ill? He may be dead. Poor man!" |
