这是一本英文专著。全书22章，除导言一章外，包括4个部分，分别为中国旱地的基本自然特点（5章：分布和类型；气候；地形地貌；植被；土壤），主要问题（3章：水资源和节水；风蚀、沙尘暴、荒漠化及其控制；水蚀及其控制），土壤养分管理（6章：氮素，磷素，钾素及微量元素；配方施肥，水肥耦合，综合管理），土壤水分管理（3章：土壤水分运移及损耗；提高水分利用的传统农业措施；提高水分效率的现代技术），农作管理（4章：抗旱生理，种植制度，生物灾害防治；发展旱地农业的前景和对策）。本书编写历时十多年。1992年，作者应美国
