brain kept thinking:９“What if, instead of a thousand, I should find
two thousand? Or if, instead of two thousand, I should find five thou-
sand--or one hundred thousand? Oh. what a rich man I should be!
    第十九章
    木偶回到城里，开始一分钟一分钟地数着时间。当它认
为该返回时，就顺原路向奇迹宝地走去。
    他步履匆匆，心像挂钟一样滴答滴答兴奋地跳动，脑海
里一直忙着想：“如果发现树上不是l 000，而是2 000，我
该怎么办?如果发现树上不是2 000，而是5 000或10 000，
我怎么办?噢，我会多么富有啊!
       I'll build myself a beautiful palace, with a thousand stables
filled with a thousand wooden horses to amuse me, a eel!arI over-
flowing with
emonade and ice cream soda, and a library filled
with candies and fruits, cakes and cookies."
      Thus amusing himself with fancies, he came to the field. He stopped
to look for the large vine
filled with gold coins, but he saw nothing!
      He took a few steps forward, and still nothing! He stepped
into the field. He went up to the place where he had dug the hole
and buried the gold pieces. Again nothing!
      Pinocchio became very thoughtful and began to wonder what
he should do next.
      As he did so, he heard a hearty burst of laughter close to his
head. He turned sharply, and there, just above him on the branch of
a tree, sat a large Parrot, busily preening4 his feathers.
    我要建一座美丽的宫殿，同时还有l 000个马厩和1000
匹木马让我开心。我还要有一个地下室，里面放满柠檬水和
冰淇淋苏打。我还要有一个图书室，里面摆满糖果、水果、蛋

去寻找那个结满金币的大葡萄藤，但什么也没有看到!
    他又向前走了几步，还是没有!他走进那块地，来到他
挖坑埋金币的那个地方。仍然一无所有!
    匹诺曹苦思冥想，开始琢磨着下一步该怎么办。
    正在这时，他听到自己的头上方突然传来大笑声。他急
忙转过身，只见他上方的树枝上卧着一只大鹦鹉，正在忙着
梳理羽毛。

     "What are you laughing at?" Pinocchio asked peevishly.
     "I am laughing because, in preening my feathers, I tickled
myself under the wings."
      The Marionette did not answer. He walked to the brook, filled
his shoe with water, and once more sprinkled the earth which cov-
ered the gold pieces.
      Another burst of laughter, even more impertinent than the first,
was heard in the quiet field.
      "Well," cried the Marionette, wrathfully this time, "tell me,
Mr. Parrot, what amuses you so?"
      "I am laughing at those simpletons6 who believe everything
they hear and who allow themselves to be caught so easily in the
traps
set for them."
      "Do you, perhaps, mean me?"
    “你在笑什么?”匹诺曹恼怒地问道。
    “我笑，是因为我梳理羽毛时，弄痒了翅膀下面。”
    木偶没有答话，走到小溪边，用一只鞋灌满水，然后又
在盖着金币的那堆土上洒了洒水。
    这时，寂静的田野里又传来一阵大笑，这一次甚至比第
一次更粗鲁。
    “好了，”匹诺曹这次愤怒地叫道，“告诉我，鹦鹉先生，
是什么让你这样好笑?”
    “我在笑那些傻瓜，他们听到什么都相信，那么容易就落
入了别人为他们设置的圈套。”
    “你大概是说我吧?”
