Sparta Education
Is education important to a country? A successful education will make a successful country. Yet in the same way, a bad education will make a country worse. Education is the foundations upon which a country is built. To be a strong city-state, Sparta depended largely on its own special education system and the special military values that were taught. This gave Sparta the ability to compete with Athens and the rest of the outside world. The strengths of education in Sparta outweighed the weaknesses of the education in Sparta. The conditions and values of Sparta make their education system a reasonable option.
The Spartan believed in training their young to fight. This militaristic value made Sparta one of the most powerful city-states in Greece. Sparta was a military city-state. Their main belief was that people should live by fighting, be competitive, and win in battle. This belief was the foundation of their education. For Athens, it was the opposite. They believed that people should live by gaining knowledge and by being thinkers.
The education in Sparta was reasonable considering the time period of Sparta. In the 5th century BCE, the ancient world did not have common laws. For example, in the modern world, almost all countries have a similar laws that states murder is a punishable crime. In the ancient world, where not all countries had a government to manage the citizens, criminals may not be punished. In the cruel Greek city-state of Sparta, most of the people fought and stole for a living and the economy was not stable. Spartans did not farm much. Instead, they conquered other city-states and forced them to farm for them. In general, they did not have a stable economy, they just lived by others and it shows that they can easily survive.
Sparta’s strict requirements made the Spartan boys strong. For example, at the age of seven, a Spartan boy had to leave his family and go to Agoge(a troop). The Spartan boys were required to go barefoot everyday in order to prepare them for climbing hills easily and descending steep inclines with less danger. They were required to wear the same garment throughout the year to better prepare them for changes in temperature. As for food, the boys were not given much food so they could learn to continue working on an empty stomach, and be able to carrying on longer without extra food. These training gave Spartan boys a chance to survive when they are in extremely hunger and extreme temperature.
Spartan boys were also trained to be mentally strong, brave and develop strong military skills. For example, the agoge required boys to steal, encouraged them to get their own food by their own cunning. They needed to spent lots of time to plan it and investigate. They also needed to have good fighting skill to be able to protect themselves for days from the people they robbed. This training helped the Spartans develop their intelligence, fighting skills and made them brave.
In addition to the strengths, in Sparta, people needed to respect their elders. They also believed the oldest were the strongest because all Spartan man were in the military since nineteen years old. Since Sparta was a military country, they participated in a lot of war. Every Spartan man had to go to war at least once every two years. Thus, a 60 years old man fought and survived in about twenty wars. The elders needed to have strong fighting skills and extreme intelligent military strategy in order to survive so long. It is true that elders were really strong. Spartan boys must do everything for the elders.
Many people argue that Sparta’s greatest weakness was its belief in competitive fighting. In these competitions, the winner was considered the best fighter because he had defeated all of the other well trained Spartan soldiers. This competition reminds me of my favorite internet novel called Douluo Dalu. One of the chapter in this book talks about the City of Carnage, where people are allowed to live--and kill--freely. The only chance of getting out of this city is win to the title of King Of Carnage. To do this, a person must win 100 games and be the best fighter. Like this internet novel, Spartan are able to learn a lot more about what to expect in a deadly fight through these competitions. In these competitions, the player could test their fighting skills against other Spartan soldiers. People can also improve their skills by competing in these games. I think the strength that was gained from this competition was worth more than the deaths and violence resulting from the sport. Since Sparta is a military city-state where people believed fighting skills were the most important thing.
