You may know that some English words come from French.     One interesting thing is that when we talk about meat at the table, we use French words. But when we talk about animals, English words are used. For example, a pig is called pig when it's living, but it's called pork when it is killed and its meat is brought to the table.     When the Normans (诺曼人) ruled (统治) England, the English farmers were made to raise animals for food, but they could not eat the meat. The meat was sent to the Normans' tables. The farmers could only eat rabbit, because rabbits ran all over the fields and rabbit meat was cheap. So the meat of a rabbit was not changed into a French word. It was called rabbit by the English farmers at that time and is still called rabbit today.
